Since 2003, Ms. Carrera has been a partner at Talamantes/Villegas/Carrera, LLP, a San Francisco law firm representing
plaintiffs in labor and employment lawsuits. It is this background in employment litigation that provides the edge
that allows Ms. Carrera to anticipate and prevent employment lawsuits and mediate disputes. In October 2007, Ms.
Carrera launched Karen Carrera Consulting, specializing in training, advice & counsel and mediation of disputes.
From 1996 through 2003, Ms. Carrera served as a Deputy City Attorney and litigator with the San Francisco City Attorney's Office, Code Enforcement Division. During her tenure, she received commendations from the mayor and chief of police of San Francisco for her work in serving underserved communities.
Ms. Carrera currently serves on the boards of the Northern California Human Resources Association - North Bay Chapter,
Equal Rights Advocates, and serves as mediator and panelist for the San Francisco Bar Association Early Settlement
Program and the Marin Superior Court Dispute Resolution Program. She also serves as a pro bono attorney for Legal
Aid of Marin and the Aids Legal Referral Panel. Previously, Ms. Carrera served on the boards of La Raza Centro
Legal, Bay Area Legal Aid and St. Peter's Housing Committee.
In 2001, Ms. Carrera received the Unity Award and was recognized for "Outstanding Service to the Legal Community" by the San Francisco Minority Bar Coalition and the San Francisco La Raza Lawyers Association.
In 2005 and 2006, she received the Wiley M. Manuel Award, State Bar of California, presented by Legal Aid of Marin,
as a Pro-Bono Advocate of the year.
Ms. Carrera also teaches Legal Writing and Research at University of California Hastings College of the Law. Ms.
Carrera received her law degree in 1992 from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She received
her B.A. Cum Laude in Communication Arts in 1988 from Loyola Marymount University.
